The Second Vatican Council prescribed the revision of the Rite of Baptism of Adults and decreed that the
catechumenate for adults, divided into several steps, should be restored. The catechumenate is a time of
instruction sanctified by liturgical rites to be celebrated at successive intervals of time. The Congregation
of Divine Worship prepared a new rite for the Christian Initiation of Adults approved by Pope Paul VI.
The Rite of Welcome is held during Advent. The Rite of Election is the first Sunday of Lent.
Dismissal begins in December. Scrutinies are on the Sundays of Lent. The Easter Vigil celebrates the
Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist of all the elect.
Catechists include the Priests and Deacon and parishioners who are fully initiated and willing to share their faith.
Sponsors have a willingness to share their faith; are prayerful; are welcoming and hospitable;
are good listeners; are open and attentive; are empathetic and compassionate; are informed about the parish, RCIA,
liturgical rites and are honest and willing to talk about potential conflicts.
Dismissal Catechists are parishioners who are willing to share their faith and listen to the
questions and insights of the Catechumens during the Sunday Mass dismissal time. These catechists must be willing
to attend another Mass for themselves in order to receive the Eucharist.
